'In open-world games, you traverse through a large world, and finding hidden secrets along the way is a big part of the experience,' he said. 'I thought that combining platforming with this exploration element would result in a fun new kind of experience.' And he was right.

Tominaga's approach to game design is akin to a gardener tending to a bonsai tree – carefully shaping the experience so that it grows naturally without overwhelming the player. He identified four pillars that make Infinity Nikki special: exploration, platforming, worldbuilding, and photo mode. I always tell the staff that in addition to exploration and platforming, worldbuilding and photo mode function as the four most important aspects of Infinity Nikki,' he said. And you can feel that in every corner of the game.

The platforming is where the game truly shines. By collecting special clothing called Miracle Outfits, Nikki gains a variety of skills. The Floating Outfit, for example, lets her float in the air with a tap of the jump button, reaching higher locations. Combat outfits let her shoot balls of light at enemies. Tominaga even instructed the team to focus on enemy height so that players have to jump and react rather than just mash buttons. The result is a flow that feels like a gentle river carrying you from one discovery to the next, never forcing you but always inviting you forward.

One of my favorite features is the animal brushing. Using the Bye-Bye Dust outfit, Nikki can brush animals she finds in towns and grasslands to obtain loose fur. The animals love it and grow fond of her. Tominaga came up with this idea himself, realizing that skinning or hunting animals wouldn't fit the game's tone. 'Brushing them in return for an item seemed like a better match,' he said. 'It could function as one of the many moments of joy we wanted the game to have.' And the animations are adorable – dogs show their bellies, cats purr, birds flutter. It's a small detail that adds so much heart.

Another key system is the Heart of Infinity, a skill tree that you upgrade by collecting Whimstars scattered throughout the world. 'Upgrading the Heart of Infinity allows you to unlock more Miracle Outfits, among other things,' Tominaga explained. 'Essentially, it functions as leveling up your character.' This creates a solid gameplay loop: explore, platform, collect, upgrade, and repeat. It's addictive in the best way.

But what about the dress-up aspect? That's where Styling Challenges come in. These are bouts against NPCs to see who has the best fashion coordination. The best part? They're optional and don't require you to wear high-stat gear. 'We wanted the player to be able to wear what they want without having to think of the stats of a certain outfit,' Tominaga said. Even when you use a skill like jumping or brushing, Nikki's outfit temporarily changes and then reverts to your chosen look. This was actually a change made after playtesting – one staff member noticed they were stuck in the same Miracle Outfit for too long, so the team implemented auto-switching. It's a small quality-of-life feature that makes a huge difference.

The world itself is a character. Weather and time of day change how locations look. When it rains, Nikki's clothes look wet, and picnic sets are moved so they don't get soaked. Tominaga hopes players notice these little details and take photos. And with a deep photo mode, you can capture everything – from the grasslands to future areas like snowy mountains and a deep forest inhabited by faeries. Post-launch updates have added even more, and there's a planned home feature where you can invite friends.

Momo, Nikki's cuddly companion, is another highlight. 'Momo is a very important companion to Nikki, so we chose to put a lot of effort into portraying their friendship,' Tominaga said. Momo walks alongside Nikki, follows her when she floats, and even sits in shops listening to conversations. It's these subtle animations that make the world feel alive.

Working with the Infold Games team was a new experience for Tominaga. 'My first impression was that they are a very young and passionate team,' he said. 'Many of them are in their twenties or thirties, and they are very motivated to create fun games.' That passion shines through. The CEO, Runhao Yao, told Tominaga that the concept for Infinity Nikki was to have players experience 'moments of joy.' And that's exactly what it delivers.
